Pars plana vitrectomy offers various advantages over the anterior chamber approach for vitrectomies.  Most text book descriptions on vitrectomies involve complex posterior segment surgeries.  Anterior segment surgeons need to be familiar with the pars plana approach to provide the best outcomes for their patients!

This course will help surgeons learn techniques for non-complicated vitrectomies in cases with vitreous prolapse, vitreous opacities, blocked filtration tubes, and removing IOLs dislocated into the vitreous cavity.

DMEK Course

DMEK / DMAEK / DALK

For experienced DSEK/DSAEK surgeons

Descemet’s Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (“DMEK”) is the latest iteration of endothelial keratoplasty. It replaces only Descemet’s membrane and endothelium, and leaves the patient’s cornea closer to its original condition than any other transplant technique.  The course addresses the most common reason for repeat DSEK/DSAEK: Wrinkles and Folds.
Two-day course:  Registration fee:  $3,000 (Category 2 CME)

• February 14 – 15, 2012
• April 17 – 18, 2012
• September 25 – 26, 2012
• November 6 – 7, 2012

To Register:  DMEK_Course__Registration_Form_2012.pdf

Benefits of DMEK:

 2.8 mm or smaller corneal incision
 No increase in corneal thickness
 No refractive shift from donor graft
 Ability to pre-operatively plan astigmatism management
to reduce or eliminate pre-operative cylinder
 No changes or guesses for “fudge factors” with IOL calculations
Like other forms of endothelial keratoplasty, DMEK involves a whole new learning curve.  It has some similarities to DSEK, but also a number of dramatic differences in donor preparation, manipulation in the eye, and post operative care.
 Live surgery
 Wet Lab
 Ultra thin cut
 Big bubble and hand dissection techniques
 Examination of post-operative patients
 Videos:  Complications / Difficult cases
 Didactic, including:
o Current status of DMEK
o Comparison to DSEK
o Complications
o Methods of donor preparation and insertion into eye
o Techniques for management of graft once inserted into eye

WHAT DO I BRING?

Participating physicians must bring the following items:

 0.5 forceps
 0.12 forceps
 Small smooth tying forceps
 Small angled tying forceps
 Sinsky hook
 At least 5 or 6 human corneal scleral rims at least no more than 7-10 days old

You may bring your practice tissue with you or have your eye bank ship it to us.
