For Optometrists

Focus on Education Seminar

Course Description

Purpose
Optometrists need to participate in continuing education efforts in order to maintain their licenses to practice.  These seminars, first offered in 1992, are an annual event moderated by Kathy Kelley, O.D. and sponsored by the Cornea Research Foundation of America and Price Vision Group.

The entire day is focused on optometrist education with ample opportunities to hear contemporary experts on topics of concern to them, to examine and discuss the latest in vision care products with representatives of organizations that help underwrite the event, and to network informally with one another over lunch and during the breaks.

Sample of previous course offerings has included:
Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Eye Disease and Dietary supplementation.
(COPE 24118-SD)
In this lecture, Dr. Jeff Gilbard explained the disease mechanisms associated with AMD, diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema and which of these mechanisms were addressed by the ARED’s supplement and which were not.

Advancements in Cornea and Anterior Segment Surgery
(COPE )
Francis Price, Jr., M.D. brought optometrists up-to-date on the current results of DSEK,/DMEK/DMAEK, Intralase and anterior lamellar grafts as well as how to medically manage these patients.  He also discussed newer studies with Anacortave and steroid responsive glaucoma.

Cross-linking, Keratoconus and Corneal Ulcers
(COPE)
In this lecture, Erik Letko, M.D. updated O.D.s on keratoconus and the current, as well as new, treatment options such as collagen cross-linking.  Dr. Letko also discussed how he is using crosslinking in treating cornea ulcers.
