Fellowship Program
Corneal and Refractive Surgery Fellowship Program 1990 - 2010
Description: The Cornea Research Foundation of America contributes to the education of new corneal surgeons in conjunction with a fellowship program offered by Dr. Francis Price and the Price Vision Group. This is a unique cornea and anterior segment fellowship that combines complicated anterior segment procedures and refractive surgery, including:
- phakic intraocular lenses
- LASIK and PRK
- endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK/DSAEK, DMEK, DMAEK)
- anterior lamellar keratoplasty (ALK, DALK)
- keratoprosthesis
- laser-assisted keratoplasty
- artificial iris implantation
- intraocular lens exchange utilizing pars plana vitrectomy
- scleral-and iris-fixated posterior chamber lenses
- glaucoma setons
- non-penetrating glaucoma techniques
Upon completion of the program, it is expected that the fellow will be a well-rounded, confident and resourceful ophthalmologist who is able to manage the most challenging anterior segment cases.
Fellows are exposed to the numerous clinical research studies conducted by the Cornea Research Foundation each year to improve surgical techniques and outcomes. With assistance from Foundation staff, each fellow develops and completes one or more clinical research studies, presents the findings at a national eye conference and publishes the results in a peer-reviewed medical journal.
This is a premier fellowship that exposes fellows to leading edge surgical procedures that are not available in most fellowships. We believe that no other program offers the combination of skills and expertise that can be gained in this fellowship.
The fellowship application is available through the Central Application Service of the San Francisco Matching Program. Click here to register with SFMatch and download our application. We look forward to hearing from you. http://www.sfmatch.org

Fellow for 2009-2010
Dr. Carlindo Pereira began his year-long fellowship with Dr. Price on July 1, 2009. He comes to Indianapolis most recently from the VA Medical Center in Loma Linda, California.
Born in South Africa, and a graduate of the University of Stellenbosch in Cape Town, Dr. Pereira has many years of medical training, first as a family practice doctor and then specializing in ophthalmology. He has shown the capacity to set a goal and reach it. As he puts it, “My upbringing in a multicultural Portuguese/Afrikaans family in politically diverse South Africa has largely impacted who I am as a person. I am not afraid of working hard. I don’t give up easily and I don’t take people or cultures for granted.”
When he applied for the fellowship, Dr. Pereira became convinced that he would benefit from the “huge diversity of skills” able to be acquired, due to the breadth of the practice, and the large number of transplant procedures performed. His goal for the coming year is to “learn as much as I can from Dr. Price and Dr. Letko about the EK procedures of DSEK, DMAEK and DMEK.”
